My Mother’s Shadow started with five words on a doorstep: I think I’m your sister. Summer of Secrets, on the other hand, was born in a place. It is set in Cornwall, which is such a jewel-bright, magical corner of the world that it’s impossible for your imagination to stay still. Two years ago, I was walking along a cliff path with my family, looking down into a hidden cove revealed by the low tide when I suddenly found myself wondering what would happen if you fell. If you got trapped down there, all alone, waiting for the tide to come for you. It was bright out and warm, just around Easter-time, but I was shivering. Holding my son’s hand very tightly, I walked along the edge of the cliffs carefully, not knowing that the first tiny seed for my second novel had been planted. Summer of Secrets is the story of sixteen-year-old Maddy, who has witnessed something terrible on those very cliffs, a tragedy that will forever bind her to beautiful Summerhill, her family home on the Cornish coast. Many things will happen, some lovely, others sad, but it is not until the arrival, seventy years later, of a young photographer called Chloe with a secret of her own, that Maddy’s wounds will finally heal…
